tinvìs
opaque nostalgia; cautious optimism
About
Now based in Chicago, tinvìs first took root during a move from Davis, CA to Austin, TX. Founder and songwriter Joel Daniel—a longtime member of the Davis/Sacramento music scene who spent years playing in bands with members of Tycho, An Angle, DoomBird, and Dusty Brown—set out to write his own collection of songs with the hope of joining the long tradition of Austin songwriting.
The songs that emerged were shaped by a wide range of influences: contemporary Bob Dylan and vintage Neil Young, Modest Mouse and Radiohead, and the new generation of singer-songwriters making their mark today—Phoebe Bridgers, Ex:Re, Flock of Dimes, Adrianne Lenker—alongside early Bon Iver and The National.
With the songs written, Joel tapped producer Max Hart (War on Drugs, Tegan & Sara, Melissa Etheridge, We Are Scientists) to help bring them to life. Together they whittled down the 70+ demos Joel had written to a focused collection. Hart then pulled in stellar collaborators: Jon Natchez (War on Drugs, Beirut), Luke Reynolds (Guster, Neko Case, Phosphorescent, Sharon Van Etten), and Eric Gardener (Tom Morello, Melissa Etheridge). Much of the record was tracked in Austin with Britton Beisenherz (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Marie/Lepanto, Will Johnson, Little Mazarn) at Ramble Creek Studio.
The resulting songs carry a sense of melancholy and haunted nostalgia, yet hold on to a cautious optimism. The album is titled Texnia—a nod to the vastness of California and Texas, and the desert between them, where endless opportunity meets risk. Texnia will be released in fall 2025.
